Building Real Confidence Through Daily Meditation
Do me a favour… Think of a time in your life when you were unshakably confident.
You know, things flowed seamlessly, you weren’t afraid to take risks, and whatever challenge came your way was overcome with conviction and poise.
Felt great, didn’t it?
Let me ask you—what do you think you did differently in that moment that made you so sure of yourself?
Confidence is not coincidental and can be cultivated by harnessing the right mindset. When you understand where confidence comes from and how to get more of it, you can take appropriate actions to build those positive qualities. This will present you in your best light, ultimately resulting in more success and positive interactions.
So how does meditation ultimately help you become more confident?
It’s simple—when we meditate, we learn a powerful principle: You are not your thoughts.
Confident individuals do not listen to the negative thoughts in their heads that sow seeds of doubt. They commit to what they want and learn to ignore the voice telling them they can’t.
Confident individuals do not hesitate. They take risks. They are daring. They are fearless.
Listening to that doubtful voice in your head creates hesitancy. When we’re uncertain about our actions or abilities, over time we start losing faith in ourselves and view ourselves in a lesser light. We become a slave to those thoughts, to that lingering voice.
Don’t get me wrong, that voice in your head is there to protect you. But if you let it control your every action, you’re misusing its power. It’s like a tool that can be used for good and bad. Meditation teaches you to filter out the good from the bad and understand that they do not define you. You are the CEO of your mind, and those thoughts are merely your assistant’s assistant.
Here’s the thing though—simply knowing this is not enough. You need to act. And one of the best ways to reclaim your belief in yourself is through meditation.
When you begin meditating regularly, you start realising that those thoughts are merely fleeting moments. When you’re focusing on your breath, your body, or your mantra, and a thought seeps in, meditation teaches you to acknowledge the thought, observe it like you’re watching it through a TV screen, and then let it float by like a cloud in the sky.
This very act of observing or witnessing your thoughts disempowers them. It takes the power away from them and gives it back to you. You become fully present, which ultimately means you can be more you and worry less.
Over time, this will result in a reduction in anxiety. When you’re more in control of your anxiety, you become more adept at handling pressure and overcoming challenges with poise and equanimity. After all, in many ways, confidence is the antithesis of anxiety.
So start small. Build the habit of meditation through practice, patience, and trust in the process. It’s not an overnight solution, but with time you will find more clarity and a greater understanding of yourself and what you’re capable of.
